Joyce Huang | A Flourishing Gentleman | The man depicted is a close friend of mine, Ramon Estrada after he came out as gay. He and many others exist as the intersection of two marginalized communities where he is often shunned from both. Racism exists within the LGBT+ community and homophobia exists within all communities of color. Despite this, he learned to accept and love himself. He is happier after coming out, much happier than he ever was in the closet. The coral rose represents the midway point between the romantic love of red roses and the platonic love of yellow roses. He is emerging from the rose to show that all the love he received that helping him in his journey.
