Mike Sweeney  |  allowed to rise, most stand on their own together  This poster includes a photo of a quilt I made in the weeks following the killing of George Floyd.  I chose the images, words, materials and format of this piece for their connections to contemporary issues and the historical context of the circumstances of black life. The Printed coffee filters (stitched as quilt blocks, then lined and backed with garden cloth) are intended to associate with the numerous make-shift and ingenious mechanisms that survival takes. I wanted to make something that presented an image of the potential for strength in each individual & for unity against the many forms of repression in American society. I hope this is a meeting of a format, media, & subject that encourages collective and individual stands against injustice and inequality.
